CHAPTER 24

“What do you see?” whispered Darwin.

Patience held up a finger, signaling him to be quiet. She focused on the large open space just on the other side of the rack of equipment they were hiding behind. She wasn’t certain what she had expected, but the sight before her wasn’t it.

To their left was a disused conveyor system. Assorted trash and broken machine parts had been stacked neatly at first and then haphazardly atop and in front of the system. It was now an impressive wall of scrap metal and lumber.

To their right stretched a seemingly endless open space. You could see where machines had once been bolted to the floor but were now long gone. A maroon minivan was parked next to two other vehicles. On the minivan’s driver’s side was a lime green and ebony Kawasaki Ninja 300. Next to the sports bike was a Covelline Blue Metallic Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren.

Near the vehicles, were two groups - the kidnappers and the kidnappees.

Yoki sat in a plain wooden tablet arm school desk, one of five in the area. Her hands were lashed above her to the pillar at her back. A chain around her waist secured her to the desk and pole. Next to her, atop a battleship gray metal office desk lay Bo. She was cocooned in black duct tape.

The kidnappers sat near their victims in a setting more appropriate to a Victorian parlor than the floor of an abandoned factory. A head-turning brunette sat on a peach and cream striped Louis XV French style settee. Next to her, slouched a mousy blonde woman in a beige balloon chair. A large black woman sat in one of three buttercup Chippendale chairs. The group was arrayed around a large marble turtle top table playing three handed mahjongg.

The scene had a surreal feeling to it.

Patience turned to face Darwin.

“The girls are here and look to be unhurt. There are three women playing mahjongg nearby.”

“What!?” squeaked Darwin louder than he had intended.

Patience gave him a withering look and held up her hand. She listened for a moment before continuing in hushed tones.

“What did you expect? Muscular paramilitary men pacing back and forth with automatic weapons at the ready? The guards aren’t expecting anyone for hours. Your friends are tied up and not going anywhere. They are bored and killing time. Just be glad they are leaving your friends alone.

“Okay,” said Darwin. “Sorry. What now? Can we rescue them?”

Before Patience could answer, the sounds of Ravel’s Bolero echoed in the large open space. Patience looked back at the group. The brunette picked up a pink rhinestone encrusted cell phone and answered it.

Patience activated the enhanced audio capability in her left ear and turned it towards the woman.

“Calm down and tell me that again,” said the brunette firmly.

“They’re here,” said the voice on the other end of the phone. “The guy and his PI friend overpowered Sheryl and April, tied them up and drove Sheryl’s van here. They’re probably inside now.”

“How did they know to come here?” asked the brunette in an icy voice.
